Todd A. Bibey, NFCT regular, 39 The actor Todd A. Bibey of Mattituck died on Aug. 17 at his residence. He was 39 years of age. Cancer was the cause of death. Mr. Bibey was very involved in local community arts as an actor and active member of the North Fork Community Theatre, Northeast Stage and Hampton Theater Company. He was a cofounder of the Orient Point Players, B & B Productions Dinner Theater and the Acting Out Loud Theater Company. Multitalented as an actor, singer, director, set designer and builder, and master cabinetmaker, he was a veteran of independent student films and industrial films in New York City and acted in several national television commercials for Tiger Toys. At the time of his death, he was in the process of moving to a professional career with a theatrical agent in the city, according to Jim Barney of Mattituck, a close friend over the past 18 years. "He was a rising star on his way to greatness when he was struck down by this disease," Mr. Barney said. Among Mr. Bibey's extensive credits were memorable performances as Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire," the title role in "The Nerd" for NFCT and several main characters in Peg Murray's Northeast Stage productions of "Shakespeare in the Park." Mr. Bibey also delighted young and old in years past as the gift-bearing pirate who welcomed visitors to Greenport on behalf of the Greenport-Southold Chamber of Commerce. Those performances always were complemented by such props as a cutlass and black eye patch. "Todd did more living in his 39 years than most people do in a long lifetime," Mr. Barney added. "He was a dear, true friend who'd go out of his way to help people, even hitchhikers." Echoing those words was actor and Acting Out Loud cofounder Dave Markel of Southold. "Todd was a good friend and as great an actor and director as I have ever had the privilege of working with," Mr. Markel said. "He will be greatly missed." Born in Southern Pines, N.C., on Feb. 13, 1961, to the Rev. Joel and Geraldine (Williamson) Bibey, Mr. Bibey moved to Orient at the age of 16 from Miami, Fla. He worked as a building contractor for Sorenson Carpentry in Orient. He leaves his wife, Elizabeth (Bondarchuk), and son, Jeremey, of Mattituck; his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Bibey, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Williamson, all of Shallotte, N.C.; a brother, Dennis Dayton of Massachusetts; and four sisters, Tonya Volinski of Greenport, Tammie Nyce of Pennsylvania, Lisa Perkins of Virginia and Maureen Zuhoski of Cutchogue. The family received friends Aug. 20 at DeFriest Funeral Home, Mattituck, where a funeral service was held that evening. The Rev. Robert Grindle officiated. A memorial service on Aug. 23 took place at Summerhill Baptist Church Cemetery in Carthage, N.C. Interment followed on Aug. 24. Memorial donations may be made to the Todd A. Bibey Memorial Arts Fund, c/o Jim Barney, 3430 Wickham Ave., Mattituck, NY 11952.
