He was born on Oct. 19, 1933, to William and Julia (McCaffrey) Heaney and grew up in Greenport. He retired in 1981 from Catholic Charities and split his retirement years between Austin, Texas, and Greenport. He was a carpenter, and he was known to many around Greenport as "Uncle Jerry" because he helped people do work on their homes. He belonged to the Triangle Yacht Club in Greenport and Catholic War Veterans. Mr. Heaney is survived by his daughter, Beth Hamilton of Freeville, N.Y.; his son, Jerry, of Austin, Texas; four brothers, Bill, Jimmy, Bernie and Jack, all of Greenport; a sister, Julia Bondarchuck of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister Mary and his brother Joe. Visiting hours were held at S.B. Horton Funeral Home in Greenport on Sept. 27, and burial was at Calverton National Cemetery.
