| Shared note | died at 1 1/2 years of age from smallpox When Sarah was little there were no mandatory vaccinations for "epidemic" diseases. Smallpox was treated by isolation and quarantine of cases and "ring vaccinations" of everyone who lives nearby. Smallpox had a mortality rate of 20-30% or greater for small children. Sarah became ill during an epidemic and succumbed just twenty days before her 2nd birthday. Sarah was named after her grandmother, Sarah Connally Haas, but her mother called her Sadie. |
