John travelled with his father Evgeny on the SS Pennsylvania from Hamburg Germany leaving on October 22, 1912 and arriving in NY at Ellis Island on November 5, 1912. According to the ship's manifest, they were to meet with a friend named Dorobey Kidun on 41 Canal St. in NYC. John was listed as 18 years old, 5'7" with Blond hair and Brown eyes. His father was listed as 44 years old 5'10" with Brown hair and Gray eyes. According to the audio tape of Jenny (Adamiak) Bondarchuk, Evgeny stayed in the US for about 2 years. There is conflicting information that John had any siblings. Walter Bondarchuk noted that john had a sister and they were spoiled rotten. Another story was that Ivan was in the Navy in Belarus and apparently "jumped ship" which was what led Evgeny to bring him to the US. According to John's Application for Registry of an Alien on April 12, 1933, he last lived in Minsroy Guberni, Gorod Pinsk and was born in Minsroy Guberni, Gorod Minkowich. Guberni is similar to County (now called Oblast) and Gorod is Town or City. The Application lists his residences as:Seacaucus NJ from Nov 1912 thru Feb 1913, Greenspring WV from Feb 1913 thru May 1913, 62 Pike St. NYC May 1913 thru May 1914, 49 Clinton Street Yonkers, NY May 1914 thru March 1917, 625 McIlvan St. Chester, PA March 1917 thru July 1924 and Flint St. Greenport, NY from Aug 1924 on. He was working at Spreckles Refining Co. in Yonkers NY when he met Jenny (Johaska) Adamiak. She was working in Yonkers and they dated for a month before they got married. They remained in Yonkers for a short period of time then moved to Chester Pennsylvania. According to notes from Walter Bondarchuk, his father John had a sister. On May 9, 1940, Ivan and two friends were moving a boat on the water to Greenport. A storm forced them ashore west of their destination and they walked east along the Route 25 Main Road to Greenport. Shortly after midnight as they were crossing the bridge over the Long Island Rail Road, a car hit Ivan and continued eastbound without stopping. A car was soon located by Greenport Police parked on Front Street. The right window was shattered and the handle of the right door was broken off and found later at the scene of the accident. The owner, John Reeves, a prominent garage and service station proprietor from Sound Avenue Riverhead was arrested in a nearby café.

Ivan sustained numerous injuries including a fractured right arm and hip, deep lacerations and severe internal injuries as a result of the accident. He was not expected to live and remained unconscious for three days. It was later determined that he had 48 broken bones which were not treated until he awoke from the coma. Ivan remained in the hospital for four months.
